How To Be An Editor Of Your Life

Do you ever feel like your life is so full of stuff, errands, appointments, clutter, and on and on? I have been feeling like this a lot lately, and I am sure I am not alone in feeling this.

We have all the house clutter, pushy people in line at the store, bills, friends or family fighting for your help or attention, health scares, and the ever scary news daily. A lot goes on around us, and a lot goes on in us. In our brains, in our hearts.

So, we find ourselves deciding that we are going to finally get some clutter out of our lives. Maybe it’s reading that tidying book, or watching that huge closet declutter You Tube video. We validate it by saying we need it to motivate us to get the clutter out of our lives for good. But then do we really declutter our lives? What is it going to take?

The other day I had one of those lightbulb moments while I was reading the Anna: The Biography book. Why don’t I be an editor of my life? I began to think about what editors do that work at a magazine, like Anna Wintour. An editor will edit down a group of pictures from a shoot, they refine and make more concise the photo captions, they proof and edit and change anything they see that needs to be edited out.

Lauren Bosstick talked about how she is constantly editing every single day in her solo podcast episode #605. So that means she is making changes to her day, refining, clearing.

This idea of being an editor of your life, can help you to really edit out the things that are not necessary, or that may just not be right for now. It is thoughtfully choosing what you will allow into your days, life, and years. To thoughtfully choose what will stay in your life, is intentionally choosing that thing. Being intentional with your decisions. Be strategic.

Think about how complicated some of our jobs may seem. Analyzing the stock on the stock market for clients, writing reports for the head honcho, or the 12-14 hour workdays that drain everything you have. Think about how we work so hard at our jobs, and how it is very serious. It’s important.

Now, I want you to think about this…if your job is that important (and it is), how important is the life you live, the body you live in? You are important as well as your job. I’m not saying boot the job to take care of you. I’m simply saying that the life we live is just as important as it is making money or doing cancer research. Think about that.

Here is what I mean…don’t just let life happen to you. Be an editor of your life. Do an assessment of what you currently have going on in your life. All the way from family, career, events, hobbies to scrolling on social media. What is taking up your time each day? What consumes you? What is bringing you down? What are things you can do something about?

Then begin your editing. Thoughtfully choosing what you can edit out, add in, or refine. This editing work is important. Because your life is important. Being more in control of your life, is strategically living your life, with intention.

I am editing a few things in my life right now. I want to scroll less on social media, and work out more. But I do love watching You Tubes and reels or videos. So I came up with watching videos only when I walk on the treadmill. This allows me to do both things, but not waste time anymore by sitting and watching videos. Instead, I am getting in that workout and still getting to watch videos, but fewer videos (which is better for me anyway).

The other way I am being an editor of my life, is in my daily planning of my day. I am starting with a daily plan, but knowing I may have to edit it throughout the day. Be open to editing, to refining.

Another area I am editing in is my home. Editing (decluttering) areas in my home to make room for what matters or makes more sense.

Style is another way to be an editor. Learning how to edit your outfit so you have a more balanced looking feel and style.
