New Book Coming Out: “Maame” by Jessica George…Coming out in January 2023

This book!! I got an ARC(advanced reader copy) of this book and I loved it! This book what I would classify as fictional drama. I was hesitant to do a book review on it yet, but January 2023 is just around the corner, so I thought I would go ahead and promote it because you will want to definately go get it once it is out. I will not give any spoilers in this review. Please do not give any spoilers in the comments. I will revisit this book review again on Instagram where we can talk about it once the book comes out.

Maame is about a Ghanian family that has what might be considered dysfunctional relationships with one another. A family of four, not all of them living together, and not much communication. Let me explain one of the relationships…Maddie is the main character in the story and she and her father live together because he has Parkinson’s and needs a caretaker. Her father is mainly quiet so communicating with him is difficult.

Maddie’s mother and father are still married, but don’t live together. Her brother lives in a town nearby but they are not close. Both Maddie and her brother James are adults trying to navigate responsibilities and dealing with their differences with each other. They are not close. Neither is Maddie with her mother. One of the relationships in the story continues to strain and makes me so sad and upset for Maddie.

Maddie takes care of her dad and works at a publishing firm. This aspect of her, the working at a publishing firm, I loved. I would love to read for a living. That would be like a dream. Anyway, she has to switch jobs to another publishing firm and struggles to fit in. At the same time, she moves to a flat that she shares with other roommates, who she also somewhat struggles relationship wise with them.

As the story went on, her difficulty with relationships really becomes apparant. Knowing the background of her family relationships, makes me realize that is why she is struggling with trust issues and fitting in with all her other relationships.

A major blow comes to Maddie that will leave you asking “Why?”, and feeling so sad for her. I even saw a litte of myself in Maddie with different situations in my life. You feel bad for her. You hate that it happened because she was the only one that really truly cared.

I must say the book was a little slow at the start, but all that information in the beginning of the book is very important in understanding the rest and understanding Maddie. The end of the story made me realize how humble Maddie really was. For that, she was very deserving of what she received, in a good way. Like I said, I am giving any spoilers, but as you read it you will know what I mean.

One thing I was reminded of in the reading of this book, is that doing good and doing what is right is all that matters in the end. Sometimes we get tired of doing what is right all the time, because we see so many doing wrong and getting what they want or getting away with it. But all in all, do good and you won’t ever have to worry. You won’t ever have to lose sleep over having done someone wrong. It truly pays to be good to others and to do the right thing.

This book comes out in January 2023, so be on the look out for it. I will post on Instagram about it once it gets closer to the release date. I love helping promote others’ work because I too love to write and hope to be a writer someday, and I am also a reading junky.

Happy reading!!
