Overcome Procrastination In 3 Simple Ways

Happy weekend to you all. I hope you have some great plans for the weekend. It has been rainy, sunny, cloudy, hot, and humid here in the midwest. But Friday evening was absolutely beautiful.

Do you ever find yourself procrastinating on doing things, or getting things done? Or maybe you get side-tracked like I do. Squirrel! In today’s blog post, I wanted to share with you a few things I do to help overcome procrastination, especially since I am prone to that very bad habit. I am not an expert at this, but am speaking as someone who is a procrastinator and tries to avoid it. So over time, I have kind of found what works best for me.

  • If you don’t already know this about me, I am a list-maker. I love lists. But what good is a list if you don’t actually do what is on the list? Because making lists is something I love, I have tried putting that list-making to good use, by writing down exactly what needs to be done. Break the task or project down into bite-size pieces. So, instead of putting “declutter dressing room”, I break that very large project into smaller tasks, like “declutter tanks”, or “declutter purses”.
  • The next thing I do is plan ahead by utilizing that list. Here is what I mean. Get your calendar and your list and plan ahead by putting the items on your list onto your calendar. You can spread them out over a few days, or when you see on your calendar you have time. But don’t schedule everything into one day. If you always spread out your to-do’s over several days, then you will be more likely to stay on top of your to-do list. You can use this same method to schedule your habits and other tasks you have to do everyday.
  • Now if you are like me, you have good intentions always to do those items on your list and now your calendar, but you know, life happens, right? But how do you feel if you don’t do those things on your list and calendar after you took the time to plan them out? Don’t beat yourself up though. Here is where the next step comes in…you are important, and you are important enough to keep your commitments you make to yourself. Honor them. Yeah I know it’s just you, but you would probably keep a commitment to your friend; so keep your commitment to yourself as well. Keeping your commitment to yourself requires you to acknowledge you are important and practice discipline. It will be worth it in the end. You will start getting on top of things, and you will start to trust yourself when you say you are going to do something or need to do something. You will begin to overcome procrastinating!

Results will start becoming apparent in the form of being able to stay on top of things and maintaining your life, therefore, being in control of your days rather than chasing your tail. I am still working on this, and it is a challenge each and every day, but I am bound and determined to master this. You can too!
